Sugar waxing is a hair removal method that uses a paste made from sugar, lemon and water. It's what I use at my Chilliwack studio. Here's what it does well, where it falls short, and how to get the most out of an appointment, in plain terms.
Understanding the benefits of sugar wax
The paste is applied to the skin and removed with the hair, which comes out from the root. That part is the same as waxing. The differences are in what the paste is made of and how it's used:
- What it's made of. Sugar paste is sugar, lemon and water. Traditional wax is resin-based.
- Temperature. Sugar paste is applied at body temperature. Wax is heated.
- Direction. Sugar paste removes hair in the direction it grows. Wax is pulled against it.
- What it grips. Sugar paste sticks to the hair, not your skin.
- Clean-up. Any paste left on your skin rinses off with warm water.
Put together, that means fewer ingrown hairs, less breakage and smoother results, and it's why most of my clients find sugaring far gentler than traditional waxing.
The other benefit is how long it lasts. Sugaring removes hair from the root, so most people stay smooth for 3 to 4 weeks. With consistent appointments, hair grows back finer and slower over time, which makes it easier to keep up.
How sugar waxing benefits your skin and hair
Most of what people notice comes down to two things: what the paste sticks to, and which way the hair comes out.
It sticks to the hair, not your skin. That means less irritation and fewer ouch moments. Everyone's pain tolerance is different, and the first appointment is the one you'll notice most.
The hair comes out the way it grows. Removing hair in the direction of growth means fewer ingrown hairs, less breakage and smoother results.
The paste is at body temperature. Nothing hot goes on your skin.
This is how two of my clients described the difference in their Google reviews:
“Super professional, a nice space. Nicole was really friendly and I felt super comfortable. It hurt the least out of all my sugar waxes.”
Jessica S., Google review
“Nicole gave a wonderful sugar experience!… Highly recommend switching from waxing over to sugaring.”

What are the disadvantages of sugar waxing?
It isn't perfect for everyone, and I'd rather you know that before you book.
- Your hair has to be long enough. It needs to be at least the length of a grain of rice, about 1/8 inch. If you've been shaving, that means waiting 10 to 14 days, and you can't sugar the day after a shave.
- It isn't permanent. The hair grows back, and most people rebook every 3 to 4 weeks.
- The first visit is the hardest one. It gets easier as the hair grows back finer.
- There's a quiet day afterwards. No workouts, pools or hot tubs for 24 hours.
- Some medications and skin conditions change things. If you're on Accutane or using retinol, or you have a skin condition, tell me ahead of time so we can adjust as needed.
- The technique takes practice. I trained, studied and practised obsessively, because if I was going to do this I wanted to do it right. Sugar paste at home tends to be messier than people expect.
How to prepare for a sugar waxing session
A good sugaring starts before you arrive. Here's what I ask my clients to do:
- Let the hair grow to at least the length of a grain of rice. If you've been shaving, wait 10 to 14 days.
- Exfoliate lightly 24 to 48 hours before you come. It helps lift dead skin and improves your results.
- Arrive with clean, dry skin: no lotions, oils or deodorant on the area.
- Go easy on caffeine, alcohol and acidic foods beforehand. Oddly, they can make your skin more sensitive. Stay hydrated.
- Wear loose-fitting clothes.
- Tell me about any skin condition or medication before your appointment.
Tips for maintaining smooth skin after sugar waxing
For the first 24 hours:
- No workouts.
- No pools or hot tubs.
- Keep wearing loose-fitting clothes.
Between visits:
- Exfoliate gently to help keep hairs from getting trapped as they grow back. I carry Bush Balm's exfoliating scrub and ingrown hair oil if you'd like something made for it.
- Rebook for 3 to 4 weeks out. Staying on a regular rhythm is what makes hair grow back finer and slower.
The full list, including what to do after a Brazilian, is on my aftercare page.
How long does a sugar waxing appointment take?
Less time than most people expect. Underarms are booked for 15 minutes. A first Brazilian is booked for 40, and the sugaring itself usually takes me about 15. Full legs are booked for 45. If you're booking more than one area, the visit builder on my prices page adds up the time and the total before you book.
Which areas can be sugared?
Almost all of them. These are the ones I'm asked for most:
- Brazilian, French bikini and basic bikini
- Full legs and half legs
- Underarms, full arms and half arms
- Full face, brows and the hairline
- For men: back, chest, arms, legs, stomach and buttocks
Why sugar waxing is a smart choice for hair removal
If you're tired of shaving every few days, sugaring gets you weeks instead. If you've tried waxing and found it hard on your skin, sugaring uses a paste that sticks to the hair, at body temperature, and comes off the way the hair grows. And if you've never had hair removed by anyone before, it's a gentle place to start. A lot of my Google reviews are from people who had never been sugared before they came in.
It's one of several ways to remove hair. I compare them all, including the IPL I now offer, in my guide to the different ways to remove hair.
