5.0 from 62 Google reviewsWhat IPL is
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It isn't a laser: it's a broad band of visible and infrared light, delivered in short pulses through a handpiece.
The light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair at its root, where it turns to heat. Because hair grows in several phases, most people need repeated treatments, which is why I sell IPL as a series as well as single sessions.
My machine
My machine is a DermaLase IPL, from NuBody Equipment. It's an intense pulsed light system, not a laser.
It holds Health Canada medical device licence No. 85911 (Class III), listed as “IPL - Skin Therapy System”. You can look the licence up yourself on Health Canada's website.
What the manufacturer says
These are NuBody Equipment's own claims about the DermaLase IPL, quoted from its product page. They are the manufacturer's words, not mine.
- Speed. The hair removal handpiece's spot size is 16mm x 57mm, which NuBody calls “one of the largest in the market”. It says the head “allows you to treat your clients quickly”.
- Comfort. A “built in, exceptional -5 degree cooling system keeps them comfortable”.
- Skin tones. The DermaLase IPL “is effective at treating all skin tones for both Hair Removal and Skin Rejuvenation”.
- What it can be used for. “A wide variety of treatments including” hair removal, folliculitis (ingrown hairs), age spots, collagen remodelling, fine lines, dull skin, pigmentation, freckles, epidermal melasma, rosacea, broken capillaries and scars.

Two things from me. I use it for hair removal, and for my IPL photofacial and skin rejuvenation treatments. And on skin tone: Health Canada's guideline says light-based hair removal is more difficult on naturally dark or tanned skin, so tell me your skin tone and about any recent tan before you book, and I'll tell you honestly whether it's the right fit.
How light-based hair removal works, as described in Health Canada's laser hair removal safety guideline.
How long a session takes
- BrazilianNo more than 15 to 20 minutes.
- UnderarmsAbout five minutes each side.
Those are my own timings. Larger areas take longer, and I'll tell you what to expect when you book.
Honestly
Who it suits
Light-based hair removal works on contrast. Health Canada's guideline puts it plainly: fair-skinned people with dark hair are more easily treated, and it is more difficult for people with naturally dark or tanned skin. The light targets pigment, so your hair colour matters too.
If you're not sure where you fit, call me before you book. I'd rather tell you honestly that my machine isn't the right fit than take your money.
First
Before your first session
You'll fill out a medical history and a consent form before your first session. I keep both with your booking in Fresha.
Tell me about a recent tan or self-tanner, any medications you take, and any tattoos or moles in the area. Light-based treatment can lighten or darken tattoo ink, so tattooed skin is something we plan around together.

Sugaring or IPL?
Two different jobs
- Sugaring removes the hair from the root. You stay smooth for 3 to 4 weeks, then you come back.
- IPL is a series of light sessions aimed at reducing how much hair grows back. Results vary from person to person, and by hair colour and skin tone.
- You can do both: IPL on one area, sugaring on another.

IPL with the Sugarista you already know
I'm Nicole. I've been sugaring in Chilliwack since April 2024, and I started offering IPL in October 2026. Same studio, and every appointment is still with me. More about me
Questions
IPL FAQ
What machine do you use?
A DermaLase IPL, from NuBody Equipment. It's an intense pulsed light system, and it holds Health Canada medical device licence No. 85911 (Class III).
Is IPL the same as laser hair removal?
No. A laser uses a single wavelength of light; IPL uses a broad band. Both are light-based hair removal and people often say “laser” for either. My machine is an IPL. I explain the difference on my IPL vs laser page.
Is IPL hair removal permanent?
I don't promise permanent. Light-based hair removal is about reducing hair growth over a series of sessions, and results vary by person, hair colour and skin tone.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the area and on you. Hair grows in phases, so it takes repeated sessions, which is why I offer series of three and six. We'll talk through your plan at your first visit.
Can I have IPL over a tattoo?
Tell me where your tattoos are before we start. Light-based treatment can lighten or darken tattoo ink, so it's something we plan around.
Do you offer IPL for men?
Yes. Men's back and men's chest are on the price list. Brazilian IPL is for women only.
How do I book IPL?
IPL isn't in my online booking menu yet. Call me at 250-212-4071 or send an email, and I'll set up your first session.
The studio is in Sardis, Chilliwack. I work by appointment only, and you'll get the address and directions with your booking confirmation. Clients come from Sardis, Vedder, Promontory, Yarrow, Greendale, Rosedale, and even as far as Hope and Agassiz.
Ask me about IPL
Call and I'll tell you honestly whether it suits your skin and hair.
