Does sugaring cause ingrown hairs?

The short answer

Sugaring removes hair in the direction it grows, which means fewer ingrown hairs and less breakage. I can't promise you'll never get one, and what you do between visits matters.

Why the direction matters

Traditional wax is pulled against the direction the hair grows. Sugar paste goes on at body temperature and comes off the way the hair grows, and it sticks to the hair, not your skin. That is where fewer ingrown hairs and less breakage come from.

What to do between visits

  • Exfoliate gently, to help keep hairs from getting trapped as they grow back.
  • Exfoliate lightly 24 to 48 hours before your next appointment.
  • For the first 24 hours after a visit: no workouts, no pools or hot tubs, and loose-fitting clothes.
  • Rebook for 3 to 4 weeks out. With consistent appointments, hair grows back finer and slower.

Is there a product for it?

I carry Bush Balm's exfoliating scrub and ingrown hair oil if you'd like something made for it. You can add them to your booking or pick them up at the studio. They're on my price list.

What if something doesn't feel right?

Call me. I'd much rather hear from you the same day than have you wonder.
